THE (SUPER)MAN
Mat DuVall was not even a teenager when he picked up his first dumbbell weight and began the journey to becoming the champion bodybuilder that he is today. Motivated by a strong athletic inclination and the desire get big like muscle icons Bill Pearl and Arnold, Mat began training at the sprightly young age of twelve years old. Throughout high school he excelled in several sports, including track, football and baseball. Ultimately, though, he was bit hard by the iron bug. DuVall "hated having to come out of the gym" and "absolutely lived for the feeling" he got when pumping iron.

Again not surprising, DuVall brings a powerlifting background to the bodybuilding stage. As he grew older, he trained with several famous powerlifters such as John Beck. He credits them with teaching him the basics of physique development that allow him to carry the insane mass and muscle density that he has today. Taking a gander at DuVall's personal lifting bests, it's clear to see that he was no slouch when it came to throwing around the serious poundages in the gym. He was particularly fond of the squat and deadlift, so much so that he says he would definitely be doing strongman-type events if not for his success as a bodybuilder.

In the 1990's, DuVall turned his focus to the world of competitive bodybuilding. He competed in his first statewide and nationwide teen bodybuilding competitions in 1991, placing well in both (2nd and 3rd, respectively). Crowned Mr. New Jersey in 1996, DuVall took the nationwide stage by storm once again in 1997. He competed in the National Physique Committee (NPC) Championships every year from 1997 to 2002. A pro card has strangely eluded the big man, however, and in both 1999 and 2001 he missed a card by only 1 spot when he placed 2nd in the Super Heavyweight division on both occasions. Today, Mat continues to make improvements to his physique with the ultimate goal of competing as a pro. He feels as if he "stacks up well" in comparison to other pros because he is "able to carry a degree of mass that few others can" and come on stage conditioned at that.

Although he may not be a pro (yet), Mat does have quite a high profile in the bodybuilding world. In the past, he has trained with fellow superstars Jason Arntz and Craig Titus. Mat also teamed with mass monster Dave Palumbo to create an entertaining training video with a fictional subplot called "Reconstruction of a Bodybuilder." DuVall has also had his fair share of coverage in national bodybuilding magazines. As part of a sponsorship deal, he can often be seen hawking Nitro-Tech products on the pages of MuscleMag or Flex. Finally, like many bodybuilding superstars, Mat has been given an unofficial title by muscle aficionados. He is (what else?) the man with the "World's Strongest Arms!" With just one look at those big guns, you can tell that it's no lie.
